THE WILDLIFE PRESERVATION SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA LIMITED
(FOUNDED 1909)

Welcome to the website of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia.

Our Society was formed in 1909 with a commitment to preserve and protect our unique Australian wildlife in all its forms. We are one of the oldest conservation societies in Australia and probably one of the oldest in the world.

Yet we can only move forward with your help.  If you are involved in Australian wildlife conservation in your area, you can become one of our Regional Advisers. Please contact us for more information.

Our Society publishes a national quarterly magazine, Australian Wildlife. Call for a free copy.

We are delighted at the success of our Society's University Students Grants Scheme.  Full details are available in the "Grants" section of this website.

Where there is an important conservation problem in your district it may be possible for one of our members to assist your work.  Please get in touch.

Help us continue to be effective by becoming a member.

We hope you enjoy our site and find it useful. We would be happy to receive your feedback.

Suzanne Medway, JP
PRESIDENT

Turtles and dugongs need your help!

Have your say

Turtles and dugongs around Australia are in trouble.

Their numbers are dwindling and Queensland and Federal law is failing to protect them from brutal slaughter.

But the results of the Queensland election do offer a glimmer of hope for these endangered animals. The Liberal National Party have committed in the first 100 days of government to alter the cruelty laws.

We need your help to make it happen.

Following a campaign by the Bob Irwin Wildlife Fund and Colin Riddell for over two years, and a petition by Animals Australia, and a recent email campaign by Animals Australia and the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia, the Queensland Parliament's server was unable to keep up with the flood of emails from concerned members of the public. To ensure every one of the thousands of people who have taken action had their voice heard, our Society has officially written on behalf of these people to the relevant politicians. The reply we received from the former Queensland Minister for the Environment was far from satisfactory.

A covert operation involving Rupert Imhoff, Bob Irwin and Colin Riddell, with the assistance of Animals Australia, led to a hard-hitting report on ABC's 7.30 Report, exposing the cruel slaughter of turtles and dugongs for 'traditional' hunting and a black market trade in their meat and body parts. National Goals for Conservation by 2020

Given that Australia is a land where environmental health and land use is governed by water supply, the aims of wildlife conservation cannot be separated from and must be integrated with plans for land management generally. With this in mind the WPSA sets out the following requirement to be achieved by 2020:
  1. The completion of a national land audit identifying:
    (a) Land never to be alienated from agriculture and given up to housing or other development.
    (b) Habitat necessary to sustain identified endangered species of flora and fauna and the setting aside of sufficient tracts of such habitat, including ocean habitat.

  2. Completion of a system of corridors of natural bushland to allow species to migrate naturally if faced with changes in ecology as a result of global warming.

  3. Constant monitoring and updating of lists of endangered species.

  4. Introduction of a financial reward system encouraging landholders to rehabilitate properties affected by earlier misuse. This is aimed at both commercial and wildlife benefits from the rehabilitated land.

  5. Significant advance into alternative energy sources and commercial development of same.
The Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia is willing to participate in any committees or panels set up by the Government in order to achieve the above aims. It is also willing to make specific submissions on request and offer advice from its scientific panel.
